In April we have three exciting writers taking the stage at the Basement Reading. One of my favorite San Francisco writers, Camille Roy, whose varied work includes poetry, plays, fiction and a current war blog, will join us to read new fiction. Jay Schwartz is spending most of his time making music these days with the band Evidence of the King, but I lured him into reading here because his work is so good. Combining a strange blend of toxic, mythic and dystopian elements, his work always leaves your mind wide open. And for a touch of realism/surrealism, check out the novel-in-progress of Anhoni Patel, All Good Things Die in L.A., a strange trip into the seedy underworld of Los Angeles. Her bottom-feeder characters are saved from pathos by the hilarity of their lives. So come and join us and don't forget we all go to a bar afterwards and talk about writing.
Camille Roy is a writer and performer of plays, poetry, and fiction. Her two most recent books are CHEAP SPEECH, a play, from Leroy, and CRAQUER, from 2nd Story Books (both 2002 and available from Small Press Distribution). Her book SWARM (two novellas) was published by San Francisco's Black Star Series in 1998 with funding from the San Francisco Arts Commission. Earlier books include THE ROSY MEDALLIONS (poetry and prose, from Kelsey St Press, published in 1995) and COLD HEAVEN (plays, from O Books, published in 1993). In 1998 she was the recipient of a Lannan Writers At Work Residency at Just Buffalo Literary Center. She is a founding editor of the online journal Narrativity (http://www.sfsu.edu/~poetry/narrativity) and her books are available online at http://www.camilleroy.com. She has taught experimental fiction and playwriting at San Francisco State University, and has conducted a private workshop for several years.
Anhoni Patel wakes up in the wee hours of the night to work on her novel, ALL GOOD THINGS DIE IN L.A., as well as a collection of short stories about old people, drugs, and Girl Scouts. She's also the Entertainment Editor for SF Station.com where she trashes movies for fun. When she's not reading, knitting or making soap, she reminisces about Springtime in New York City.
ensemble Evidence of the King. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and
dog. He will be reading from the perpetually incomplete manuscript of "The
Further Adventures of Anne Frank Inside the Hollow Earth."
About the Basement Reading Series:
The Basement Reading series is designed to give writers a chance to read work that is in progress and to build more community among Bay Area writers. It is a place for writers and readers to gain inspiration and create a dialogue among the varied schools of writing in the Bay Area.
